AFOS President

Greetings to all!

The Asian Federation of Osteoporosis Societies has been in the helm of osteoporosis education, research and patient service for the past 11 years since its establishment in May 2008. Its prime mission is to promote, foster, develop and assist medical and allied profession in the study of and the acquisition, dissemination and application of knowledge and information concerning the causes, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of osteoporosis with a view to reducing morbidity and mortality therefrom in the Asian region.

As has been predicted, 50% of hip fracture will happen in Asia by 2050. Group of Asian experts projected these hip fractures to increase by 2.28 fold by 2050 (from 1,124,060 in 2018 to 2,563,488) and increase in direct cost by 1.59 fold cost (from US$9.5 billion in 2018 to US$15 billion). 1 Identified challenges are decreasing number of patients being treated and decreasing treatment rate. As reflected in the AFOS leaders’ “Call to Action” the following were emphasized: make osteoporosis a national policy, continue educational programs, and increase awareness.2

This year’s 6th AFOS Scientific Meeting in Manila will showcase the aforementioned actions. International experts and renowned speakers from all over the region will share their updated knowledge on state-of-the-art diagnostic schemes, management, and discussion of related topics. Young colleagues have submitted scientific work giving us a glimpse of future direction in researches in osteoporosis. Masterclass on diagnostic equipment is in place.

The direction of AFOS is critical and important in the next ten years. An assertive and proactive organization is called for to help build new osteoporosis societies, help increase awareness in various Asian countries, advance osteoporosis education through affordable courses, and enhance networking on management.

The AFOS Philippine Team is welcoming everyone with our famous Filipino hospitality!

Julie Li-Yu, MD, MSPH

Osteoporosis Society of the Philippines Foundation, Inc. (OSPFI)

On behalf of the Osteoporosis Society of the Philippines Foundation, Inc. (OSPFI), I welcome all the delegates and colleagues to the 6th Annual Meeting of the Asian Federation of Osteoporosis Societies in Manila, Philippines. It is certainly the pride and honour of OSPFI to be the host to this event right in the heart of Manila.

The landscape of osteoporosis has significantly changed for the past decade so much so that scientists and healthcare partners in Asia and the rest of the world should come together to better understand the complex facet of this condition. In this era of caring for an aging population, all of us need to learn from each other and find ways that will address osteoporosis and fragility fractures more efficiently in this region. It is during fora and meetings like this where we need to get our acts together, plan and discuss unifying actions towards healthcare delivery to the senior citizens of our societies.

Allow me to thank the organizing committee for accepting daunting task of preparing for this meeting, to both the local and international colleagues and experts who came from all over the Asian region in support of OSPFI, and to our industry partners who have extended unwavering support to ensure success of this meeting.

Let us all learn, enjoy each other’s company, and stay connected.

Mabuhay tayong lahat!

Julie Li-Yu, MD, MSPH

President, OSPFI

Osteoporosis Society of the Philippines Foundation, Inc. (OSPFI)

The Osteoporosis Society of the Philippines Foundation Inc (OSPFI) takes pride in hosting the 6th Scientific Meeting of the Asian Federation of Osteoporosis Societies (AFOS) coinciding with our 21st Annual Scientific meeting. It is with great pride and honor as the overall chair that I invite you to this event with the theme “A Growing Global Concern in Bone Health”. This will be held on August 29-31 at the Century Park Hotel, Manila.

Osteoporosis despite recent advances in the disease management continues to be both a major health and economic burden in the region. With our growing aging population, it just tells us that the current situation will not improve unless we do more and do it fast. Thus, the organizing committee has prepared interesting and up to date topics that are intended to address the current unmet needs in osteoporosis. We have invited top notch speakers both local and international who will talk about current issues and concerns all intended to improve the quality of care we provide to persons at risk or suffering from osteoporosis.

We are definitely looking forward to an excellent meeting.
